报告摘要: The research in my group can be essentially divided into two different directions: self-assembly in and out of equilibrium. In this talk, we will give two examples of our recent work on the two directions, respectively. For equilibrium colloidal self-assembly, I will talk about our recent work on melting of 2D polydisperse hard-sphere systems, i.e., hard disks. We find that the particle size polydispersity produces two unexpected effects on the phase behaviour of hard-disk systems: i) polydispersity can dramatically enlarge the packing fraction for stable hexatic phases by one order of magnitude compared to that in systems of monodisperse hard disks; ii) polydispersity can also induced a re-entrant melting of hexatic/crystal phases with increasing density, which has been proven impossible in 3D hard-sphere systems. Therefore, this suggest a fundamental difference in the phase behaviour between polydisperse 2D hard-disk and 3D hard-spheres systems. In the second part of my talk, I will talk about our recent work on active circle colloids, in which we find that the non-equilibrium active circle dynamics can drive the system to form a new type of strong hyperuniform fluids with tunable local giant fluctuations. This suggests new possibilities of designing novel active colloids for assembly of dynamic amorphous hierarchical materials.

 

 

报告人简介:倪冉,南洋理工大学化学与生物医学工程学院助理教授,主要从事软物质物理理论与计算机模拟方面的研究。近些年倪冉教授在国际知名期刊上,包括Nature, Nature Communications, PNAS, PRL等,发表50多篇重要学术论文。倪冉2005年毕业于北京化工大学数学系,获数学学士学位,随后在北京化工大学化工系攻读硕士学位。在本科和硕士学习阶段参加多次全国和国际的数学建模竞赛并获奖,其中包括2002年全国大学生数学建模竞赛获得高教社杯(全国冠军)和2005年全国研究生数学建模竞赛获得全国一等奖等。2008年取得化学工程专业硕士,随后前往荷兰乌特勒支大学徳拜研究所攻读物理学博士学位。2012年取得物理学博士学位,并获得2011年海外优秀留学生奖学金。2012至2014年在荷兰阿姆斯特丹大学范霍夫研究所从事博士后研究工作。2014年获得荷兰国家科学院VENI独立研究基金,开始独立研究员的工作。2016年起受聘于南洋理工大学。
